Fred Bullen
When Fred retired in 2007, he moved, with his wife Patrice, from Sydney to the Mid North Coast of NSW and decided to take up the challenge of starting back into art after 40 years. He joined the local art society where he was guided in his artistic endeavours by dedicated and competent local artists who gave up their time to teach. In addition, he participated in regional workshops run by visiting tutors in quite diverse artistic media and subjects.
Inspiration comes from his local area and the urban landscape which are then reproduced in traditional or one of many styles such as ‘abstract realism’. Framed prints on canvas of his most popular works are also on offer to the public who visit his home studio/gallery ‘Lake View Gallery’ in Tallwoods. He has won awards for his works and many are currently displayed in galleries in Forster, Taree and Port Macquarie. He also enters his work in the regional annual agricultural art shows and art society Art Exhibitions around NSW.
His most recent works have been described as having been executed “by an artist who has developed his own style based on an intuitive execution. The suburban landscape is rendered with an almost photographic naturalism; but the use of bright colours, ambiguous and distorted perspectives, and strange juxtapositions suggest an imagined or dreamed reality”.
As much as Fred enjoys the challenge of painting a wide variety of subjects using an equally wide range of techniques, his greatest pleasure comes from hearing that an artwork has unlocked a heartfelt memory for the viewer.
