The process of creating a painting is an exciting and challenging problem-solving exercise in colour, composition, tone, and texture. I am particularly fascinated by the ways in which texture can be used to create depth and dimensionality in my work.
I work intuitively, letting the narrative unfold over time as I build up layers of complexity.
I live and paint in Armidale, NSW. In a previous life, I was a statistician and academic. This unexpected artistic change of direction came as a delightful surprise, but I still get to apply my mathematical training and problem-solving skills as they underpin my creativity and have played an important role in my evolution as an artist.
I aim to produce compelling compositions by using a variety of textures and marks and bold colour harmony. I am captivated by the geometrical beauty and the shock of abrupt hard-edged transitions and investigate their visual impact through changes in texture and colour, and through the contrast with the softer, organic elements in my work.
I hope to stimulate the viewer’s curiosity and imagination and provide a sense of mystery that draws you in and entices you to inspect each work more closely.
