Deborah Malor first studied art making in the 1960s, at Newcastle then East Sydney.
Around six or seven ‘careers’ later, she enrolled in university to study history but came out as an arts writer instead, teaching in the university system for over two decades.
On retirement, Deborah undertook a degree at the University of Tasmania, Launceston. Being a student again took her back to the studio, where her work experiences now contribute to her art work: mapping, ecology, mining, printing, environmental design, geography, and history.
An archivist by tendency rather than training, anything in a container is of interest. Most of her artwork is on paper and often re-made into book forms. She also has a fascination for watercourses and their edges, making inks from locally-foraged materials.
Her work has been seen in three solo and over thirty group shows in Tasmania, Victoria, and New South Wales since 2000.
Originally from farmland at Moore Creek and Currabubula – but with four previous generations from ‘up the Moonbi’s’ — Deborah relocated from northern Tasmania to Armidale in 2025.
