I work primarily as a handbuilding ceramicist, building functional ware that is quality, and that exudes beauty and style. The creative process of hand-building to me unlocks ideas as it takes place, extending a thought into often a serendipitous outcome.

I strive for quality more-so than perfection as imperfection can be the beauty – a bit of wabi-sabi.

My pieces are meant to be held and used, but can also just be admired.

Artist Bio

Helen Adams – Emerging Artist

I immersed myself in the ceramic medium starting in 2017 attending weekly classes year-round with Kara Wood at her Tighes Hill space. Kara recognised my interest in hand-building and watched over, providing ideas, learning and support as I extended my skills and ambitions. During that time I sculpted quirky garden pieces, my versions of cultural and ancient pieces, and hand built functional ware, always aiming for a quality finish.

On moving to Tenterfield in northern NSW in 2022, I worked with a number of experienced potters at the Stanthorpe Pottery Club while I built up my own studio, and attended day and weekend workshops there.

During that time I continued to develop my skills and love for hand-building, and started working on slab constructed lidded boxes, perfecting the dimensions and glazes that make the works appealing. To integrate my hand-building with wheel thrown vessels, I attended throwing courses at Lismore TAFE and throwing workshops with Raven Esque in Goonellebah. My artistic intent is to build on the theme of lidded boxes, making beautiful and interesting pieces that are useful, tactile and beautiful.
